Changes
We may update this privacy policy from time to time in order to reflect, for example, changes to our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons.
In Quebec, Bill 64 significantly updated privacy regulations, aligning them more closely with GDPR, the European Union’s data protection standard. This new legislation emphasizes transparency and user consent for the use of personal data. It mandates companies to inform users about the collection and use of their personal information, ensure the security of this data, and report any privacy breaches to authorities and affected individuals. Companies must also maintain records of such incidents for five years.
These regulations have multiple facets:
- Transparency and Consent: When collecting personal data, businesses must clearly inform individuals about the data collection and its purpose, allowing individuals to give informed consent.
- Privacy Breach Protocols: Businesses are required to report breaches that pose a significant risk to individuals to the Commission d’accès à l’information du Quebec (CAI) and notify affected individuals.
- Data Management: Businesses should only collect necessary information, ensure it is securely stored, and destroy it when it’s no longer needed for legal or business purposes.
These changes came into effect progressively from September 2021 through September 2024, marking a major shift towards enhanced privacy rights for individuals and greater responsibilities for businesses operating in Quebec (BLG) (Retail Council of Canada) (BLG).
