According to Greek mythology,
Amethyst was associated with Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry. The legend goes that a young maiden named Amethystos was pursued by Dionysus, and she prayed to the gods to remain chaste. The gods answered her prayer by transforming her into a white stone (clear quartz). Feeling remorseful, Dionysus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple.
